The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (Brazilian Championship A Series), simply known as Brasileirão, is the top men's professional soccer league In Brazil. The league is composed of 20 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B.
A Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A season runs from May to December. Each club plays a total of 38 games - once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents (double round-robin system).
Clubs are given three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, victories, goal difference, and goals scored.
At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned champion. Meanwhile, the four lowest placed teams in are relegated to Série B, and the top four teams from the Série B are promoted to take their place in the Brasileirao.
