Understanding Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) over under bets require learning how a tennis match is scored. Tennis players need:
In the 2017 Australian Open Men's Singles final match, Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 for a total of 44 games or points, for betting purposes.
Meanwhile a typical over under tennis bet would look like:
R. Federer | Over: 23 | -108 |
R. Nadal | Under: 23 | -108 |
In the example above, betting $108 on "Over 23 games" wins you $100 if the total points of the match is 24 or more. Meanwhile, betting $108 on "Under 23 games" wins you $100 if the total points of the match is 22 or less.
So if the match ends with a score of 6-4, 6-4 (for a total of 20), "Under" bettors win. But if the match ends with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 (for a total of 30), "Over" bettors win.
If, for some reason, the match ends with a total of 23 points, the bet is called a tie or push and all bets are returned. To avoid this, odds makers add a half point on the totals.
Sports books also offer over under bets on the total sets of a tennis match instead of the points. An example of this is an over or under of 2.5 sets for a match. If the match ends in two sets, "Under" bettors win. If the match reaches the third set, "Over" bettors win.
Remember, the winner of the match does not have a bearing on the outcome of an over under tennis bet.

There are practically thousands of tennis matches happening all over the world, and you don’t need to bet on all of them. Remember to always bet selectively.
Also, check player rankings or tournament seeds. Higher ranked players can handily defeat fringe players which makes "Under" bets attractive. A word of caution though, the "Under" bet may be the heavy favorite for this type of matches.
