Football Over Under Bet

Football over under bets can be divided into two categories - game total points and season win totals.

A football, specifically an NFL game, over under bet looks like:

Kansas City Chiefs	Over 48.5	-110
New England Patriots	Under 48.5	-110

In the example above, betting $110 on "Over 48.5" points wins you $100 if the game's total score reaches 49 or higher. Meanwhile, betting $110 on "Under 48.5" points wins you $100 if the game's total score is 48 or lower.

The winner of the game is irrelevant to the outcome of the bet. All that matters is the score.

Bet selectively, especially in the early part of the season. Use first couple of weeks to create an offensive and defensive benchmark for each team. Then use this benchmark to handicap the succeeding games.

If you like to bet on "Over", look for games that feature high octane offenses with little or scarce defenses. If you prefer to bet on "Under", look for games that matchup slow, grinding teams.

Of course, always check for player availability either due to injury or suspension. You wouldn't expect the Patriots to score a ton without Tom Brady, would you?

Also look out for players who have an axe to grind against an opposing team – players who got traded away or got cut. These players maybe out for a breakout game, either defensively or offensively, impacting the total score.

The best and simplest way to handicap NFL season win totals is to check the schedule. NFL teams only play 16 regular season games. Unlike basketball or baseball, NFL teams don't to play every other team.

A formula determines each NFL team's opponents every year, and a rotating schedule ensures that every team plays each of the other 31 at least once in a four-year period. In short, you can pretty much throw last season's win total when handicapping the coming season.

Handicapping season win totals can be trickier than handicapping particular games. A lot can happen during the season, and the off-season (trades, drafts, etc.) as well. But it can fun and rewarding, if you do your research well.
