Over / Under bets on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights are getting more and more popular. Well, you may ask, how can there be Over / Under odds on MMA fights when the sport has no scores?

Actually MMA fights are scored are scored on a 10-Point Must System. Under this system, 10 points are awarded to the winner of a round and 9 points or less are awarded to the loser, except for a rare even round, which is scored 10-10.

This system is the same scoring system used in boxing.

However, Over / Under MMA bets are based on how many total rounds a particular fight would last, not on the scores of the fighters.

Let's look at this hypothetical Over / Under MMA bet:

You might ask - what's with 4.5? Are there half rounds in MMA now? Well, there are no half rounds in MMA fights. Odds makers add the half round to avoid ties, in which case all bets have to be returned.

In the example above, "Over" is the favorite, indicated by the "-" (minus). Betting $155 on "Over 4.5 rounds" wins you $100 if the fight reaches the fifth round. Meanwhile, "Under" is the underdog, indicated by the "+" (plus sign). Betting $100 on "Under 4.5 rounds" wins you $125 if the fight ends in the fourth round or earlier.

The winning fighter is irrelevant to the outcome of an Over / Under MMA bet. In the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), non-main event bouts last for three rounds while championship and main-event fights last for five rounds.
